Hard Knocks is the prequel novella in Foster’s new Ultimate series, and boy have I been excited for this one… because I have a bit of a thing for fighters *wink*. In Hard Knocks we meet Harper and Gage.

Gage has returned home as an injury has prevented him from fighting. Harper and Gage were building a connection before he left and now neither of them are sure where they stand. But these two are pretty forward, so after a bit of watching and encouraging chats from friends, they work on what they had.

Hard Knocks takes place over only a few hours, and I enjoyed the pace of the story. The attraction between the characters was strong, so it was inevitable that they would get together. It was a fabulous introduction to some new characters and I look forward to seeing more of the guys. There was no Cannon (just mentions of him), however, so I am definitely looking forward to seeing him in his book that comes next!!

Hard Knocks is a short novella that focuses on Gage and Harper while also introducing a myriad of characters that will make up Lori Foster's new series, Ultimate. Gage is a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter who through a slight mishap ends up injuring himself enough during practice that he is medically nixed from competing in his next match. Harper has known Gage for most of her life and has harbored a serious crush on him since high school. Before Gage left a couple months ago to step up his training, he and Harper were dating and getting awfully close to having their own little wrestling bout in the bedroom. The story takes place at the rec center (a central hangout and gym for fighters and kids to come to get off the streets) on the night Gage's fight was suppose to take place. As people gather there to watch the fights, Harper decides it's up to her to get Gage out of his funk.

This story is under 100 pages, so it isn't really about character development but rather introducing you and setting up the Ultimate series. There is not much backstory to Harper and Gage so this isn't so much about the building of their relationship but rather a glimpse at the spark that sets their relationship off. The story moves quickly and our leads are cute with enough chemistry together that you'll breeze through this with a smile on your face.

The other MMA fighters introduced are given enough face time to intrigue and make you want to read their books. If you have read Foster's series Love Undercover, you may even recognize the name and character Cannon. Cannon is discussed here and is the star of No Limits; book one in this Ultimate series. I have already read No Limits and trust me, you do not want to miss his story. Hard Knocks may not be a long and involved story but it is a fantastic supplement to the Ultimate series.
What a great start to the new Ultimate series! Short, sweet, sexy...I don't think you could ask for more out of a prequel! Although after reading this I kind of wish Gage and Harper had a full length novel of their own! I just love them.
This prequel introduces us to the new characters that will be part of the Ultimate series...Gage, Denver, Armie, and Stack, and of course Cannon we already know from the Love Undercover series.
Oh how I loved when Gage finally came to the realization that he loved Harper, I got all tingling and happy! Just thinking about it now has me a little giddy, I almost can't put into words how I feel...
~Damn, but he adored her. "I lost it a long time ago. I just forgot to tell you." Ugh, how could you not love him for that???
I really enjoyed Harper's character as well...she's feisty and can definitely hold her own with the big, tough guys, especially Gage. She understands what Gage's training entails and doesn't want to interfere or distract him, but does want to be part of his life. And Gage now knows he wants her in his life as well. "To wherever I go, whenever I go. For training. For fighting." He tucked her hair behind her ear, gave her a soft and quick kiss. "For today and tomorrow and the year after that." I don't think I could love him more after that declaration, swoon!
