A Possibility of Violence A Novel Avraham Avraham Series D A Mishani 9780062195401 Books

I've enjoyed this series by, D.A Mishani. I will read the next book in the detective series with Avraham Avraham, who reminded me of a toned down Inspector Cloussou in, The Missing File. In, A Possibility of Violence, he reminds me a bit of Columbo. Avi isn't the most perfect of inspectors, but he has a good gut. In this story, Avi is sent to figure out why someone set a suitcase that contained a fake bomb near a daycare center. The search leads Avi down a couple of different avenues, but something doesn't sit well with him regarding a suspect that he interviewed. This story takes place mostly during the holiday, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, which lends a unique setting to the story.

I enjoy the character of Avraham very much. I liked the first story a little more than this one because this dragged on at times for me, but these books are more of a slow and steady read which is why I like this series. Mishani's mysteries aren't your typical police procedurals. There is more of a human element to these stories, but not in a soapy way. Avi is a rather quiet, and thoughtful man. He is sensitive to a degree that can hurt him, but like I said,he's got a good gut and his superiors don't always appreciate this quality in him.

I like this series. I enjoy the setting of Israel and feel the author has done a fabulous job in creating a detective series that is more thoughtful then action packed and crime ridden. In this story, Avi has learned from his previous case where several mistakes were made that caused the charges of the perpetrator to be less stringent. In this case, Avi remembers his failures as he struggles to trust his instincts again, which lead him down a different path than he first started. Avi has to rely on his own gut feelings if he is going to solve any crimes before time runs out.

A Possibility of Violence A Novel Avraham Avraham Series D A Mishani 9780062195401 Books Reviews

This is a psychological murder mystery which begins slowly but picks up pace as Avraham Avraham who returns to Israel from Brussels, having spent time with his girlfriend gets assigned to investigate a bomb threat. He is hit with a baffling case, in fact, it is a suitcase bomb found near a childcare center which has everyone gravely concerned. Avraham is assigned to interrogate suspects and narrow down the possibilities. However, he is haunted by a previous case, one in which he became personally involved and which, although it got resolved, could have resulted in prosecution if he had made better judgements. The case had been brought for review, an unpleasant situation resulting in his feeling he now was under a microscope, for every decision and judgement that he made.

The author gradually builds suspense as different employees and parents of children at the daycare are interrogated and their , answers, body language, voluntary statements and tone of voice analyzed. Avraham suspects the the owner of the childcare center is somehow involved and not entirely truthful with him. He has her under his radar. Avraham' narrows down his suspects to a few, one of whom is Chaim Cohen, a father whose wife had taken a trip to the Phillipines, leaving him to manage the children. When the father makes plans to fly to the Phillipines to visit his wife, several details come into focus creating new unexpected twists and turns in the novel that bring forth another more serious problem for investigation. Needless to say, this novel develops a new line of investigation where Avraham goes out on a limb, risking his job and reputation. This is a very fascinating novel on multiple levels psychological, cultural, and mysterious events, which will keep you on the edge of our seat, guessing and wondering where the next clue and investigation will lead. Highly recommended book. Erika Borsos [pepper flower]
Love this book and The Missing File, which precedes it and is the first in the series. Great writing , riveting plot,,and --not always a given in mystery series--excellent character development. I have recommended both books to several friends who have also loved them.
Not my cup of tea
Excellent product
Unrelievably tedious. What a bore! Nothing happens; then, nothing happens; then nothing happens again. I'd hoped for something "Israeli," but this snooze could have taken place anywhere. Just awful. AVOID.
There aren't many good detective stories from Israel-- in fact, there are very few translations into English of what exists in the genre from Israel. Aside incessant from terrorism inflicted on it, Israel is actually a very safe place. That's why the two books by D.A. Mishani are so welcome-- we get to see the dark side of Tel Aviv, Israel's largest city, from the point of view of a detective who has to deal with the police bureaucracy while trying to solve crimes and also trying to find some kind of a life for himself in his few hours of spare time. Mishani is a first-class writer; his characters are well-developed, the writing is taut, the story is compelling, and all in all, not only are his first two books are top-notch-- they fairly scream to be made into movies, except that some Hollywood script writer will end up trying to be politically correct and ruin them. So for that reason, I hope they remain away from the clutches of Tinsel Town. I also hope MIshani will continue on with this series, or start a new one, or publish under another name-- anything, so long as he keeps on producing such excellent work.
