YA fiction is riddled with spineless adults and this book is no exception. Doublespeak abounds in this novel, mainly coming from the adults. HOPE is shown to be very important when all else seems to be failing. HOPE may be a dim flicker..,but it is still there. Many middle schoolers do not understand the concept of HOPE or a dim HOPE. This book brings home how important it is to fight for a right cause and not to give up hope. As a teacher, I would use this book before entering a Holocause unit. The parallels students could draw are many. This would make a good read aloud.

Think of the orphanage in the musical Annie. Now take away the music, take away the levity, and prepare yourself for Fearless.

The outside world thinks that the institute is a place of rehabilitation and education, but it is actually more of a prison and workhouse. The young girls who have been placed there have, for the most part, forgotten their real names and families. Their names have been replaced them with letters and numbers, stating their rank in the levels X, Y, or Z, but they have given each other nicknames, such as Beauty, Tattler, Stargazer, and Little Fearless, the book's heroine.

Little Fearless is aptly named, because she will have to stand up to some bigwigs and intimidating adults in order to free her peers. The tough man who runs the place sticks to the policies of those even higher than he, the cruel persons who run the entire city. Little Fearless devises a plan to escape from the institute and tell others in the city what is happening to her and the other children.

Had I not seen the ending coming, or had the ending not been quite as implausible-yet-predictable, perhaps I would have enjoyed it more.
Men who are apparently police come in the middle of the night to take a young girl (whose given name we do not know until the very end of this novel) to the City Community Faith School. She is one of one thousand girls there whose given names are taken from them, and they are given a letter (X, Y, or Z, depending on their standing) and a number. So the little girl is now known as Y73. The girls, however, have nicknames among themselves, such as Stench, Tattle, Lady Luck, and Stargazer. Our protagonist becomes known as Little Fearless because she is brave enough to ask questions of the authorities at the so-called school (actually a juvenile girls' prison) and tell the girls stories to give them hope that they might leave their horrid surroundings. She also does many other things that earn her the nickname she has from the other girls.

The author, Tim Lott, published several novels for adults prior to this work, but Fearless is his first work for younger readers. This novel will keep readers on the edge of their seats and thinking about what Lott is telling through this novel. I can easily see young people who like this novel growing into Orwell's 1984 in their high school years.
Fearless is a book that you either hate or love. I came out on the "love" side. It's definitely the best children's (as opposed to YA) dystopia that I've read, reminding me of a kid-oriented version of 1984 and Brave New World. The writing style, which is distant (like good floating-on-a-cloud distant, not bad disconnected-from-readers distant), reminds me of the "magical" books I've read this year, Noah Barleywater Runs Away, The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, and An Atlas of Impossible Longing - those "odd," genre-bending books whose tales and storytelling are like nothing you've ever read and remain imprinted in your mind as unique reads.

Plot-wise, Fearless isn't exciting. Fans of The Hunger Games and similar dystopias will be disappointed by the lack of action. But aren't dystopias meant to have deeper commentary, anyway? Fearless carries a lot of good messages, messages about identity, community, truth, bravery, and inner strength. (It also has some things to say about politics and religion, but these are more submerged.) The novel isn't perfect - at times the pointed explanations and stilted dialogue can be annoying - but it goes down in my mind as one of those rare reads that's different from any other and that I will highly recommend to fellow readers.
The book was molded. I had to return it.
This is my favorite story, I read it when I was younger. It was exactly what I was looking for and I'm happy to have found it!
The book came quickly, was a great price and tracking was easy.
Even my reluctant readers enjoyed reading the book.
I read this book to my son every night, a chapter at a time, until finished. Near the end, he couldn't wait to go to bed so we could find out what was going to happen to "Little Fearless".

This book is a great eye-opener for today's kids who think they have it rough, because they have to study, and do chores. It gives kids a different perspective of how other kids might not have it as easy as they do.

My son was in tears at some points of the book, as he became so attached to the characters in the story. When the tears came, he laughed out loud and said, "I can't believe I'm crying! It's only a book!" This book is very well written, and the story quickly grabs your attention, so that you don't want to put it down.
