My teenager needed this for school. It arrived fast and in perfect condition. The story was so interesting, I ended up reading afterwards. There were moments in the story I was literally laughing out loud and then others when I was in tears. Beautiful and heartfelt story.

Wish I had heard about this author before. Great reading.
I Love this book and am buying it again for a reread. Gave my first copy away. I don't reread often because there is definitely too many books and too little time.
A very intriguing read about Jesse and his family. Especially crazy relatives that come over to visit him.
The novel was engaging, entertaining (my wife wondered why I was laughing out loud quite so much), and endearing. Sort of a whimsical remembrance of how things were (or weren't, I was never quite certain) as the protagonist grew in his boyhood. Tall tales well told.
Son being forced to read this summer for school. I would not make him otherwise.
I was assigned this book for an Appalachian Literature course and loved it! The stories are woven together into an overarching narrative of the young narrator's upbringing in Appalachia and his odd family. The stories are approached with respect to the Appalachian region and its folk traditions, while also being engaging and memorable. A wonderful book. I cannot recommend it enough!
The father-son relationship was richly told. Their "rusties" were funny, and they seemed to really enjoy each other. Despite their lack of riches, the family was loving and caring. Even Johnson had a place in their family and in their lives. The storytellers, the uncles, enriched their lives and made Jess a storyteller also. The author, Chappell, filled the story with humor, tragedy, and just plain old joy. I liked everything about the book.
