My very good friend came for a visit and had to tell me about the "Parasol Protectorate" series. I thought I would just buy the first one and see if I liked it. Save yourself the trouble and just buy the whole series. It is that good. I am currently in the last volume of the series and it is laugh out loud funny.

If you are familiar with Elizabeth Peters and like her Amelia Peabody series, you will most definitely appreciate this series. You will especially like it if you enjoy mixing steam punk and Victorian England. This series is really fabulous. Can't wait to explore her other series.

I splurged for the 4-book set, thinking I'd like it and it would be a good deal if so (it's hard to keep up with all the reading I do, and books get really expensive!)

Luckily, I read and read and read, and couldn't put my down. These books are great. I can't wait for Carriger's next parasol protectorate novel! /drool
I loved these books. All of them to the very end. Can't say that very often. Usually, about 2.5 books into the series the quality of writing and the story plot take a nose dive. Not with these. I felt like Elizabeth Peters, Amila Peabody, goes steam punk. Amila Peabody has always been one of my most beloved fictitious characters, (or is she?). So naturally, her steam punk sister in arms worked her way into my heart immediately! You absolutely can't go wrong with a steam punk, mystery, love story. I sincerely hope that she does a spin-off with their daughter as the main character and of course vampires live a very long life so her vampire father would still be around. Thank you, Gail Carriger, for hours of wonderful escape​.
I have decided to embrace my inner steampunk and a friend told me about this series. It's all there - mystery, murder, romance and sex that doesn't make one gag. Lots of imagination here and a knowledge of human inconsistencies and motivations. I'm only sorry that I was so obsessed with them that I read them way too fast. Definitely worth multiple re-reads.
I only discovered this series last month when I saw a friend reading it via Goodreads. I bought the set digitally because it was on sale, and had a couple other things to read first. I was all set to read it after I finished Vivian Shaw's Strange Practice. Coincidentally, there was a preview of Soulless at the end of tha book! What are the odds? Or was it fate engineered by supernatural forces? Given the similarities of the two -- supernatural mysteries with classic literary monsters and strong female leads, it's not that surprising.

I've seen wildly varying responses, with criticisms mainly being that it's not the book that some wanted it to be. There is darkness, danger, and a fairly good mystery. But Carriger is also interested in making this believably set within the Victorian era. This means Alexia, the 26 year-old "spinster" whose mother "put her on the shelf" (rather than on the market for marriage) because she was too tall, with too big a nose, too curvy and too dark (her dead father, was, gasp, an Italian), has some limitations, and is not exactly a superhero kicking ass. Put down by her family and society, she has self doubt, while all the same being bold, brave and more intelligent than nearly everyone in her sphere except perhaps for her 400 year-old gay vampire bud. Then there's Lord Maccon, alpha werewolf and head of a secret branch of supernaturals that reports directly to the Queen of England. She and Maccon spar throughout much the book with some of the wit of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, but with a bit more slapstick comedy involving incidents such as a hedgehog in the crotch. Alexia was also born without a soul, which gives her touch the power to neutralize abilities of supernatural creatures. This makes her formidable in some ways, but a target in others.

Some people have a problem with the romance portion taking equal part with the action in the second half of the book. While it's not my usual bread and butter, it's well written and executed, and pretty sexy in fact. It's such a cliche that that sort of thing is only meant for women. The fact that ridiculous notion survives in 2018 goes to show that we have a ways to go to evolve beyond the Victorian era, let alone the dark ages.

Yes, it's fairly light reading, though there are some dark moments indeed. But in its own way, nearly flawless. I'll be reading the rest of the series for sure.
From what I understand this series put Gail Carriger's name out there and helped her stand out. I can completely understand.

Soulless and Changeless, the first 2 books in this series are extremely fun. Alexis is a fun character and the way the story unfolds is both fascinating and fun. These two books show the work of someone who took some time and consideration in generating their world. The vampires here are some of the best written I've seen in urban fantasy. Yes, they are somewhat integrated into the society around them, but most of them clearly just look upon humans as a dangerous food that needs to be handled carefully. You do get the one Lord Akeldama, but he's pure fun in his own way and often helps move the tale along.

The werewolves aren't as well developed as the vampires, despite the importance of Lord Maccon, but they also work relatively well overall. I was honestly impressed by that.

The last two books do drop a bit in overall quality (which is why I don't feel like I can give this boxed set 5 stars.) This really stood out in Timeless where I felt the mystery was just not as well thought out and a bit too obvious. (due to spoilers I can't even try to point out the problem, I feel its that obvious.)

But its a good series by a very good author. Worth the read even if you aren't a lover of urban fantasy.
