Mr. Lamb's latest blew me away!
I read his debut novel, The People In Between: A Cyprus Odyssey because I had a connection to the world Mr. Lamb wrote about with such splendid prose. As a result, I was anxiously awaiting the publishing of his next novel in hopes of even more of the same satisfaction that came from the first one. What totally blew me away was the talent this author has for grabbing not only my attention, but for others that hunger for his brand of adventure.
A Dangerous Element is driven by a main character, who anyone with a sense of chivalry could stand behind or wish to walk in the same boots with. Mark "Coolhand" Reynolds is just that kind of guy. A skilled aviator, consummate problem solver, and diplomat, Reynolds served his country well, until everything came unglued. The cool thing about this story is the aspect of redemption and the element of good winning over evil.
I liked Lamb's characters and his ability to weave a good yarn around current events. I feel like he still owes me a sequel or two and I'll be standing by for news on the next installment from this entertaining author.

A Dangerous Element by Gregory S. Lamb, is a political and military based adventure that is mostly centered on the activities of Air Force Colonel Mark “Coolhand” Reynolds. The first half is pretty slow and somewhat tedious, as much time is given to setting the stage for a major event. Once that crisis occurs, the action does pick up a bit, but the same kind of attention to detail present at the beginning, seems to be lacking in the home stretch, eventually leading to a conclusion that is too convenient and tidy to be very credible.

The author’s military background is obviously a major contributor to a story, which devotes a great deal of time to military procedure and protocol, and is heavily laden with military acronyms, slang, and colorful nicknames.

Much of the novel alternates between the activities of Reynolds, and those of an Iranian scientist named Khedem, who is involved in the development of atomic power for Iran’s government. This back and forth style of plot development is an effective technique that works pretty well. Lamb also scores some points, for coming up with a clever method by which Iran’s nuclear program is dealt a heavy blow, but what happens in the aftermath is rather cloudy, as different characters emerge from obscurity, spin off in completely new directions, and then become the primary players in an international nuclear incident. If these events are anywhere close to the real world, there is probably some cause for concern.

With mostly male characters, no romance, and some instances of schoolboyish behavior, A Dangerous Element seems to be primarily targeted at males. While a decent read, some of the points of emphasis seem misguided, and the story could probably have been streamlined a bit. There are some interesting elements, and good character development, and but the focus seems to be a bit off, with too much information about minor things, and a lack of detail regarding some critical points. And some of the conclusions that various characters come to, are quite remarkable.

Reynolds has an interesting career path. A pilot pulled from active duty becomes a desk officer at several agencies, and eventually winds up at the Pentagon. He is then posted to the Tel Aviv as a military attaché. After deciding to abandon his military career, Reynolds then transforms into a full blown “James Bond” type field operative. Legal machinations are seldom this rapid, but Reynolds surprisingly has $400,000 in death benefits available to him, just over a week after his supposed demise.

An e-book version of the novel was provided to me by the author. I wish I could be more positive, but perhaps my expectations were too high. Unless you’re really into military based thrillers, this would just be a mild recommendation.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. The author's writing style is engaging and draws the reader into the story. For the first half of the book, with the exception of a little artistic license, the material is very accurate.

It is the second part of the book where most of the problems happen. There are some minor and pretty major plot issues which should have been addressed in editing. I will try to flesh this out a bit without providing spoilers.

An example of a minor plot issue is at the beginning of the book. There is a minor character who is in the same situation as the protagonist. We never do find out why this character is in the same boat as the protagonist. Not major but mildly annoying.

However, from the middle to the end the plot gets really confused, rushed and is missing plot devices to draw the reader in. As an example the TS?SCI weapon discussed throughout the book is never utilized except at the beginning. And it is never really explained why it was even used on the protagonist. The back story behind the conflict between protagonist and antagonist is fine but there is no real credible reason why the antagonist left the USAF and went to work for the other agency. It was written off in one sentence. There was a fairly major character who was killed off with a short sentence and I still am not sure who did it or why. The antagonist also planed to kill that character also because it completely undermined what the antagonist was supposedly trying to achieve. To me this was a big issue. There is more but there is no point belaboring the point.

The next problem is when the big moments finally come, they are gone before you know it. If I wasn't reading it on a , I would have though I missed some pages. There are numerous standard plot devices which are used to give a satisfactory covering of big moments and none were used in this book.

Finally, there is no real character development and no real distinction made between characters and extras. Several characters are introduced who are really just extras. I was mostly apathetic towards any characters and that includes the antagonist and protagonist as I had no emotional involvement in either one.

Overall, I believe this book strives to be like a Clancy novel with all the vast military detail. That aspect works well and is interesting and technically correct. However, it fails to be engaging on the human emotional level. As I said I enjoyed reading this book, the writing is engaging. I would give it 5 stars for technical accuracy and the story background and then 2 stars for the latter part of the story and human element for a total of 3.5 stars.
