Spirit Dances The Walker Papers Book 6 CE Murphy 9780373803255 Books

I've always loved urban fantasy. I tried this author finally after I'd run out of ilona andrews, Patricia Briggs, and faith hunter books. This series started slowly, but I enjoyed the character as an adult who finds out she has magic and proceeds to mess up everything in her path. There is background romance, but that's not the main emphasis in the books. I began to love the series around book four. I just finished this one, book 6, and this one is right up there for best book ever.I actually gasped out loud several times. The surprises were truly surprising! This one is a must read, but you have to read the others first to get to this one with real understanding of the characters and their growth. Fabulous character driven series!

Spirit Dances The Walker Papers Book 6 CE Murphy 9780373803255 Books Reviews

I love Joanie Walker, and seeing her become Siobhan Walkingstick has been amazing. Catie Murphy writes so well I swear I know these folks. I can’t wait to see what comes next! This is a series you do NOT want to miss!
Excellent, as always. I love the Walker Papers, and this book is no exception. I love Joanne's, continued growth, the mysteries, the magic. Humor, drama, dead bodies, flirting, and love and lust, all in one book!
I love these books. They are truly interesting, and bring into the story lots of cool information about Joanne being a Shaman, and how she learns how to use her heritage and her power, so to speak. She starts out as a reluctant Shaman, and eventually starts calling on spirit guides and friends who are aware of her predicament to help her use her powers to conquer gods, demons and etc. I just wrote a loooong review for number 5, so I'm almost worded out, but don't miss these books if you are at all interested in fantasy, or books that include magic. I lucked onto these books because I had run out of Jim Butcher's Dresden books. (You must must read those books if magical reading is something you like!) I'm really glad I started these Shaman books; they are really great!!
Spirit Dances is one of the best of The Walker Papers series, if not the best! Joanne thought she might get a break from the supernatural world for a little while when she's given tickets to a dance concert - and invites Morrison! Now her worry is focused on not screwing up on their date. However, nothing is as easy as it seems for Joanne...

I'm quite impressed with how much confidence Joanne has gained and how much she's grown throughout the series. It's nice to see her working toward actualizing her full potential and full control of her abilities. She's stopped running from her problems and the situations she finds herself in, which is very refreshing. I also enjoy Joanne's relationship with her mentor and her spirit animals.

This series is one of my favorites and I'm now counting the days to the next book!

The Walker Papers Urban Shaman (1), Thunderbird Falls (2), Coyote Dreams (3), Walking Dead (4), Demon Hunts (5), Spirit Dances (6), Raven Calls (7)
As with all of the "Walker Papers" novels, this is a fantastic read. Each book in the series is better than its predecessors, with this one obviously being the best so far.

If I can be nit-picky here, there are minor editing problems in the book (in point of fact, in several of the books in the series) that seem to consistently get missed by both Murphy and her editor; editing problems that tend to momentarily shock me out of the story. For instance, "these ones" is NOT proper grammar, but it has been used repeatedly throughout the series. If it were only used as part of character dialogue, I could overlook it as part of Murphy's character building. Unfortunately, it gets used in the narrative, as well.

However, while this does bring me out of the story for the second or two that it takes me to shake my head, the rest of Murphy's writing, as well as the story itself are so strong that I immediately jump back in with both feet. Additionally, I think the only reason the few errors I find bother me so much, is that in general the overall writing is SO compelling and strong.

C.E. Murphy is a wonderful author, and I eagerly await the next story in the series.
The Walker Papers series is one of my favorite, go-to, always-buy urban fantasy series, and I'm happy to say that, with this sixth installment, it hasn't lost any juice. In fact, it seems to have picked up some momentum. Huge events happen in this novel, including Jo shifting into a coyote, a big date with hottie Captain Michael Morrison, and, of course, murder.

While these novels could definitely be read on their own, if you've read any of the others, you can really appreciate how Jo, the main character, grows, develops, and learns from her previous mistakes. And she makes a ton of mistakes, mostly because, while she has a few people who understand what she's going through and can advise her in her journey as a shaman, she doesn't always listen to them quite as much as she should. Still, she's got a good head on her shoulders and is a smart, strong, and good-at-heart character (love!).

In this story, Jo really gets in touch with her Native American side, beginning with a trip to a Spirit Dance. Unfortunately, that transformative dance not only begins Jo's shift into a coyote, it ends in a murder. As no one knows what happened or how the dancer died, Jo's got to investigate. At this point, she's had enough experience to plow forward with her investigation, though she doesn't have many leads. In other stories, Jo kind of froze when something supernatural happened. I love to see that she's taking charge of her life and forging ahead to solve another mystical crime.

A great mystery, Jo growing as a shaman and strengthening her grip on her abilities, and fantastic characters all bond together to make SPIRIT DANCES one of my favorites in the Walker Papers series.
